Who would have known a simple weekend vacation to the resort in the Catskill Mountains would end up being smack dab in the middle of the revolutionary war? Carl and Beth never thought such a thing could happen until they stepped outside the side door of their little get-away cottage to find nothing but wilderness and nothing around but the wild life. They search for help only to find soldiers, and Indians. Can they ever get back to the present? Or will they be forced to live among the settlers for the rest of their lives?

Outside That Door (Audible Audio Edition) Jennifer Robins, Julia Farhat, Audible Studios Books Reviews

An interresting tale about a couple who walks outside their cottage to find nothing but wilderness in the catskill mountains, Carl and Beth go further into the overgroen land that has now taken the place of the wonderful park they so loved. Jennifer Robbins leaves you in suspense to how this young couple will ever get back to the presenttime but with her great imagination she pulls it off!
Carl and Beth decide to leave the hustle and bustle of the city for a weekend escape to their cabin retreat in the Catskills. What begins as a romantic getaway for the married couple soon turns into a nightmare when they realize they have been thrust into the past...way into the past, during the Revolutionary War. Will they be able to find their way back to the present day, or are they doomed to live in the past?

I thought this was an extremely fascinating premise for a story, and it really allowed for my imagination to run free. I asked questions to myself such as, "How would I react if I were in that situation?" I must say Carl and Beth handled it well, but it was obvious to me Carl was the rock in the relationship!

What I found most impressive was Robin's attention to detail. I could imagine every rock and every blade of grass, I once again found myself feeling like a voyeur on the inside of the story. She also did a phenomenal job of conveying the kaleidoscope of emotions this couple went through. The time period they were thrown into, I thought was perfect. First off they are in a time of war; secondly the couple had no modern conveniences. Although Robins probably did not mean for it to be funny, I got a chuckle when Beth got distraught over the lack of bathroom facilities!

When readers hear the words paranormal books, the mind usually goes straight to creatures and things that go bump in the night. The fact that this was different from what I normally read was a refreshing change.

Outside That Door takes readers on an adventurous trip back through the sands of time, and Robins made it a fascinating ride!

All Beth and Carl wanted was a little weekend R&R in the mountains. They never expected to be transported through time, having all traces of modern civilization vanish from the Earth. By some unknown means, they are sent back in time to the years of the Revolutionary War.

This is an exciting tale that is full of suspense. The characters' emotions are quite real, and their bewilderment and fear comes shining through. I enjoyed having two ordinary people thrust into a very unordinary situation.

The story weighs down a bit two thirds of the way through. Our couple has encountered mostly good people so far, with a few suspenseful moments thrown in. Here we see them doing mundane farm activities and going off on several hunting trips as they await the person who may be able to help them out of their predicament.

I was disappointed that the people from the past spoke as if they were from our own time period. I would have felt more immersed in the situation if the people from the 1770's spoke as if they were from that time period. The author has done well describing their manner of dress and food to help us visualize the correct setting, but the dialogue could have used a few tweaks to fit in better.

Chief Paul was an interesting character during his brief appearance. He carries knowledge that will assist Carl and Beth, but we are left without any explanation of how this man knows what he knows. The ending is rather anticlimactic, and I wished Chief Paul had played a more engaging role in it. Carl and Beth's situation was intriguing, but in the end we get no explanations at all.

This book could have used a bit of fact checking. The couple encounters a buffalo, but bison were no longer present in New York state during this time period. Also, they encounter snakes which would not be active during the late fall, especially with descriptions of the cold temperatures filling the story. Also, two men go hunting for rabbit with rifles. In that time period (and even now) hunters would be using traps for rabbits, which would avoid damaging the useful fur.

I have to give a mention to Tabitha the kitty. I'm an animal lover and enjoy seeing them present in the books I read. This kitty enjoys going for long rides in the car, which is unlike most cats. I also appreciated that Beth continues to worry about her after their cabin mysteriously vanishes. She was not forgotten despite the misadventure of her parents.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
